HISTORY OF CUPS AND TROPHIES

MEN

THE VETERANS CUP (PERPETUAL)
Presented in 1929 by Peter Good (Captain 1921)
Format: Currently Matchplay Singles for Men aged 55+
History of Trophy: Presented in 1929 by Peter Good (Captain 1921).
Originally 16 qualified for Matchplay but this was increased to 31.
 
KINGSTOWN GOLF CLUB CHALLENGE CUP
Presented in 1910 by Herbert Dudgeon V.P.
Format: Originally an 18 holes Singles Competition and later awarded as a Class Prize during the run of what was then known as “Cup Saturday”. Last played for in 2009.
History of Trophy: Herbert Dudgeon was the Father of Col Hume Dudgeon, well known Show Jumper and Vice President of the Club.                                 
 
DUN LAOGHAIRE GOLF CLUB McCRAE CUP
Presented by Charlie McCrae in 1954.
Format: Junior Open Singles 18 Hole Strokes with Qualifiers going on to Matchplay. Later became Invitation Matchplay. Now Handicap range 7.5–15. No longer a Junior Open. 16 to qualify for Matchplay.  
 
KINGSTOWN GOLF CLUB (Cooper Cup)
Presented by Captain Cooper MP
Format: Originally 18 Holes Strokes Competition. Last played for in 2009.
History of Trophy: Captain (later became Major) Bryan Cooper (Vice President) presented this Cup in 1910. He acted as Chairman of the first meeting called to form Kingstown Golf Club. He was a Conservative MP at Westminster. Later he became a TD and represented County Dublin from 1923 – 1930.
 
DUN LAOGHAIRE GOLF CLUB
MENS MATCHPLAY (CLUB) FOURSOMES
Format: Foursomes Mens Matchplay
History of Trophies: Became a popular fixture in the amateur Golfing Calendar attracting Internationals such as JB Carr, James Malone (DLGC & Portmarnock) and BJ Scannell. This was run over a week and was discontinued in 1966.
 
HARRY BROWN PERPETUAL MEMORIAL TROPHY
Format: Mens Singles Competition
History of Trophy: Harry Brown was Captain of Club in 1966 and 1967.  He died suddenly in 1992 – the year he was due to be elected as Club President. The Trophy was inaugurated in 1992 – presented by his daughter Heather.
                                   
WILLIAM (BILL) FURLONG TROPHY
Format: Mens Fourball Matchplay Competition with 31 pairs going forward from a qualifying competition.
History of Trophy: Inaugurated in 1980 in memory of Bill Furlong, Club Member from 1944 – 1981 –he volunteered to fill a gap as Secretary/Manager for some months in the Club Office.                 
DUN LAOGHAIRE (KINGSTOWN GOLF CLUB) THE PUTTERS CUP
Format:   Putting Competition played annually on the day of the Captain’s Prize to Men. 
History of Trophy: Presented by Herbert Dungeon V.P. in 1945
 
KINGSTOWN GOLF CLUB
ST PATRICKS CHALLENGE CUP
Format:  Singles Competition with 31 qualifying for Medal Matchplay. Changed from Matchplay to Medal Matchplay in 1996.
History of Trophy: This was the first Cup offered for Competitions in the Club. It was presented by the Club itself in l910 and played for, for the first time, on St Patricks Day 1911.                            
 
SEALINK PERPETUAL GOLF TROPHY
DUNLAOGHAIRE V HOLYHEAD
Format: Interclub Match between Dun Laoghaire and Holyhead Golf Club- 1988-2006. No longer played for.
History of Trophy: Presented in 1988 by Club Member Pedro Ribeiro, the then General Manager of Sealink /Stena Line in Ireland.
 
PAST CAPTAINS TROPHY
Format: Played for annually on the day of the Men’s Past Captains Golf/Dinner.
History of Trophy: Silver Salver Presented by J V Morrison in 1981 – Past Captain, President and Trustee of the Club.                
 
SPRATT PERPETUAL CHALLENGE CUP
Format:  Singles Competition for Class 2 Players.
History of Trophy: Presented by Club Member J W Spratt in l935.
Re- presented in 2010 in memory of Sean F Kennedy – Club Member.
 
KINGSTOWN GOLF CLUB PRESIDENTS CUP
Format: Strokes
History of Trophy: Presented in 1912 by the Earl of Longford K.P. the first President of the Club – awarded annually for Strokes Competition for Class 3 Players.  This was an old Saturday Competition - now used as GOY for 18+ & Veterans.
 
ALCAN STEWARDING CUP
Presented by Alcan Aluminium Company 1970
Format: Fourball v Par
History of Trophy: Won in Portmarnock by Eddie Ahearne, Mervyn Feehan, Peter McKimm and Robert Pepper in a Competition for Stewards at The Alcan International Tournament. The Alcan Company presented a Cup for a Competition for the Stewards at an International Golf Tournament held in Portmarnock. The Winners decided to present the Cup to DLGC with the request that it be played for annually in a Fourball Format.
 
SCRATCH CUP 2008
Format: Junior Open Singles Scratch Cup 2.5+ Handicaps
History of Trophy: Presented by Donal Spring, Club Member in 2008
                       
PAN AMERICAN GOLF AWARD – 1960-1976
Presented in 1960 as a Perpetual Challenge Trophy for Mens Open Singles Strokes Competition. Initially donated by Pan Am, Club Member Con McGovern in 1960 for Mens Open Singles but is now used as Golfer of the Year Trophy since 1977.

OSBORNE TROPHY (Putter)
Format: Competition played for between DLGC and Carlow Past Captains.
History of Trophy: Originally presented by William S Osborne, Club Captain in 1963 and later Captain of Carlow GC. Original Trophy mislaid and was replaced by the Putter. No longer played for.
 
KINGSTOWN GOLF CLUB
CAPTAIN’S PRIZE TROPHY       
This was discovered when a Dublin Jeweller contacted Stan Fox, in the year of his Captaincy in 2006 – it is now part of Club memorabilia – in Cabinet.
Presented by D T Moore in 1911 and was presented to the first ever winner of the Captain’s Prize in Kingstown Golf Club.
 
DR J J WEBB TROPHY- DLGC
Format: Invitation Inter Club Competition for Golfers 18+.
History of Trophy: Presented by Dr Webb, Registrar of the Wards of Court circa 1975–He left £100 in his Will for a Trophy – the format to be chosen by Council. It is now a Monday Open Singles Competition.
 
BALLYMAN TROPHY
Presented by John McGreal DLGC and Liam Collins Old Conna GC in 2008
Format: Annual Competition between DLGC and Old Conna GC.
History of Trophy: As per inscription on Trophy.
 
CLUB PERPETUAL CHALLENGE CUP
DUN LAOGHAIRE (KINGSTOWN) GOLF CLUB 1942
Presented by Brian O’Connor Esq.
Format: 18 hole Strokes – 63 to qualify.
History of Trophy: Presented by Brian O’Connor, relative of Louis Fitzgerald, a former Captain and President of the Club.
 
THE GOLDEN YEARS PERPETUAL TROPHY
(Bank of Ireland 1989)
Format: Wednesday Singles Competition played as a Veterans Singles Competition with three Classes.
History of Trophy: Presented by the Bank of Ireland, Frank O’Rourke, Past Captain, President and Trustee of DLGC.
 
SCRATCH CHALLENGE CUP
PRESENTED TO KINGSTOWN GOLF CLUB BY
M.V.BLACKER DOUGLAS JUNE 1919
Format: Singles Competition
History of Trophy: Colonel M.V. Blacker Douglas, Club Member, served in the British Army and retired from service in India.

Format: Fourball Competition
History of Trophy: Originally a Singles Competition between Greystones and DLGC but changed to a Fourball Competition in 2017.
 
JOE PARLE TROPHY – GOLFER OF THE YEAR
History of Trophy
Inaugurated in 1970 for 18+ Golfer of the Year. Joe Parle was an active 18+ Golfer. No longer played for.
 
NOBLE TROPHY FOR SENIORS 18+ GOLFERS- DLGC
Format: Stableford Competition
Presented by Club Member Reg Noble in 1992.      
 
ERIN TROPHY DUN LAOGHAIRE PERPETUAL TROPHY
Format: 18+ Golfers Singles Matchplay with 15 Hole Qualifier Competition.
History of Trophy: Sponsored by Club Member Gabriel Byrne of Fantasy Lights in 2010 and run as a 9 Hole 18+ Veterans Monday Competition. Replaced by “Enlighten Trophy” in 2012.
 
ENLIGHTEN TROPHY
Format:  Mens 18+ Handicap Singles Matchplay – 15 Hole Competition
History of Trophy: Presented by Club Member Gabriel Byrne in 2011. Played throughout the Summer with Finals on Cup Final Sunday.
 
DUN LAOGHAIRE WEDNESDAY CUP (PRESENTED BY JOHN FLYNN)
Format: Originally a 3 Club Competition but changed to a normal 9 Hole Competition in
1989.
History of Trophy: Presented by John Flynn in 1942 for a Singles Competition on a Wednesday, which was the Drapers half day. In 1989 Cup changed to a 9 Hole Competition in the 18+ group played on a Monday.
 
JACK HUTCHINSON TROPHY
Format: Played for by 18+ Golfers
History of Trophy: Presented by Club Member, Maisie Hutchinson, in memory of her husband Jack, an 18+ Golfer and Darts stalwart.

MIXED

PADRAIG HARRINGTON PERPETUAL TROPHIES
Format: Annual Mens and Ladies Singles Strokes Competition
History of Trophy: Trophies purchased by the Club in our Centenary Year 2010.
 
HARVEST MOON PERPETUAL TROPHIES
Format: Mixed Scotch Foursomes Competition with a draw for Partners.
History of Trophies: Presented in memory of Jim and Eithne Geary, Past Captains in 1957 and 1961 respectively, by their daughter Club Member Sally O’Kelly in 2003.
 
ANDREWS CUPS
PRESENTED TO KINGSTOWN GOLF
CLUB IN 1920 BY THE  MEMBERS
Format: Annual Mixed Straight Foursomes matchplay.
History of Trophy: Presented in memory of the late Mr and Mrs R A Andrews, Captains (1914 and 1915/1916.)   This Competition was stopped a few years ago, was resurrected but subsequently abandoned due to lack of support. Cups now used for Club Mixed Foursomes.
 
RENEE FOX SALVER
Format: Annual Singles Competition played for by the Choir Members.
History of Trophy: Presented by Dun Laoghaire Golf Club in memory of Renee Fox in 1999, long term Member and Choir Mistress.
 
BURMA TROPHY
Format: Singles and Foursomes
History of Trophy: Presented in 1929 by Club Member Bill Hall for an Annual Matchplay Competition for between Dun Laoghaire and Bray Golf Club. Now played for by joint Ladies and Mens Committees.

LADIES

THE BOYLAN FOURBALL TROPHIES
Format:  Fourball MatchplayDraw for Partners on a High/Low Handicap basis.
History of Trophies: These Trophies were presented by Club Members Eamon and Eilis Boylan in 2010.Until 2010 there was no Fourball Matchplay Competitions for Ladies.
 
KINGSTOWN GOLF CLUB LADIES CHALLENGE CUP      
Format: Matchplay format in two Sections – Handicaps 1 – 23 and 24 – 36 with the two respective winners meeting in the Final.
History of Trophy: Presented by the Ladies Club. Cup was purchased in 1919 for £25. Council subscribed £1 and the Ladies Club the balance.
 
LADIES MATCHPLAY FOURSOMES
McMEEKIN CUPS
Format: Matchplay Foursomes
History of Trophies: Presented by Gertie McMeekin in 1965. Mrs McMeekin, Captain in 1966, gave a subscription to the then Lady Captain Audrey O’Donoghue who bought the two Cups.
 
LADY GOLFER OF THE YEAR  
History of Trophy: Presented by the Ladies Club annually to the Lady Golfer of the Year.  
 
LADY CAPTAIN’S CUP
History of Trophy: Presented in 2010 by Alice Hayes, Lady Captain  in 1996. This Perpetual Cup is presented to the winner of the Lady Captain’s Prize.
 
NORAH FERRIS TROPHY (Salver)
Format: Singles v Par Competition.
History of Trophy: Presented in memory of Norah Ferris, Lady Captain in 1994 who was passionate about v Par Competitions.
 
DUNLAOGHAIRE GOLF CLUB LADY ASSOCIATES CUP   
Format: Ladies Singles Matchplay with  qualifiers coming from a Thursday 18 Hole
Competition.
History of Trophy: Purchased in 1928 by Ladies Club and Members. In 2001 this became the CLUB CUP.
 
DUN LAOGHAIRE GOLF CLUB LADIES SCRATCH CUP
FormatLadies Matchplay Competition. Ladies play off scratch and off the Green Tees.
History of Trophy: Presented in 1962 by Riatt Walker, Lady Captain in that year.
 
AUDREY O’DONOGHUE MEMORIAL TROPHY
Format: Annual Ladies 18 Holes Singles Competition.
History of Trophy: Presented by DLGC in 1997 in memory of Audrey O’Donoghue, Past Lady Captain in 1965 and International Golfer playing five times for Ireland between 1948-1953, she captained the Irish Junior Team in 1967/1968 and the Irish Team in 1973/1974.
 
COMMITTEE CUP    
Format: Ladies Singles Competition for Committee Members past and present. Played for annually in conjunction with a Thursday Singles Competition.
History of Trophy: Presented by Lady Huggard as a VETERANS CUP circa 1952 . As not many Ladies would admit to being a Veteran (over 55) the Competition was abolished in the early sixties and re-presented as The Committee Cup.
GRANNIES TROPHY (Glass Bowl) 
Presented by Club Member Sally Higgins in 1991 for 18 Hole Grannies Competition.
 
GRANNIES TROPHY (Glass Vase)
Presented by Liz Jordan in her year of Captaincy in 2015 for 9 Hole Grannies Competition.
 
DLGC PERPETUAL PUTTING CUP
Format:  Putting Competition held annually on the day of Lady Captain’s Prize.
History of Trophy: Presented by Club Member, Mrs Riddick in 1949. Trophy known as The Riddick Cup.

History of Trophy: Presented by Hazel Higgins in her year of Captaincy in 2000.

History of Trophy: Plate presented to the overall winner of the two combined 9 Hole Competitions.
Plate presented by the Ladies Club in 2008.

History of Trophies: Trophies presented in memory of Club Member, the late May Hegarty. Original Trophies subsequently replaced.

FormatAnnual Junior Girls Matchplay Competition.
History of Trophy: Presented by Jim Cassidy in 1997. Switched in 2001 to Junior Girls GOY. Reverted back to Matchplay in 2012.

Format: Matchplay Competition for Parent and Junior Members
History of Trophy: Presented by Club Members Liam Madden and Derek Montgomery in 1997.

History of Trophy: Presented by Club Members Lorna and Niall FitzGerald in 2015

COL GEORGE A HUGHES – CHALLENGE CUP 1937
Format:  ?
Col Hughes won the Cup for Horse Racing in 1903 in Hong Kong where he served in the British Army. One of the old “Saturday Cups” last played for in 2009.
Trophy made of hand-beaten Indian Silver on a carved mahogany plinth.
